Financing Smallholder Farmers in Africa: Lessons from Five Countries

Opportunity International (OI) finances smallholder farmers in five countries – Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and Mozambique. The program has been operational for the last two years and is based on the OI Rural Model, initiated in Malawi in 2008. The presentation highlights learning from implementing OI’s Rural Model, including the use of crop and household profiling and land mapping for better lending decisions. The program is on target to have up to 100,000 farmers in loan finance by year-end 2011. OI’s strategy of expanding access through a range of delivery channels to offer additional banking products and services, including Savings, Money Transfer and Insurance, is also featured.
